In some families, the following naming pattern has traditionally been used in naming the succession of children born to a family:

The first son is named for the father's father.

The second son is named for the mother's father.

The third son is named for the father.

The fourth son is named for the father's eldest brother.

The first daughter is named for the mother's mother.

The second daughter is named for the father's mother.

The third daughter is named for the mother.

The fourth daughter is named for the mother's eldest sister.




Finding Your Ancestors and Relatives Using Naming Patterns

As you've probably already noticed in your research by now.....as you go through the generations, the same names keep cropping up over and over!  I must have a dozen different ancestors with the same first name or middle name!  At first I thought it was a nuisance and made research more confusing!  BUT, believe it or not, I've been able to link and then later verify from other sources, families I never would've thought to look at!  These rules aren't always followed exactly, but I think it will pay off to keep them in mind!
