Surnames & Message Board of Sturgis, MS
I have combined both the surname and the message board here.  Please feel free to post the surnames you are researching in Sturgis and the surrounding area here.  Do not forget to include a contact email or snail mail address so that other researchers may contact you! Posts of interest to anyone researching this area are also welcome!  Good luck in your search!

If you want to do a query for each of the surnames you are researching, you can go to Ancestry's Surname Community (message boards currently being updated).  More resources located at the Rootsweb Surname Resources Area.

When posting a query, try to be as specific as you can.  If you type, "looking for all Smiths, 1850-1900" you won't get a lot of serious responses!  Use first and last names of ancestors and any birth, death or marriage information you have.  The location is also very important, so make sure you include Oktibbeha, Sturgis and Mississippi in your post!

Look-up Requests:

We are currently not doing any look up requests, due to time constraints, BUT you can easily request the first two books thru your local library and Inter-Library Loan (ILL).  The other resources you should be able to find online or try the website, Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness.

1.  Book:  Historical Sketches of Oktibbeha County by Judge Carrol.

3.  Book:  Alabama and Mississippi Connections:  Historical and Biographical Sketches of Families Who Settled on Both Sides of the Tombigbee River by Judy Jacobson.  See what surnames are mentioned in this book by clicking HERE and paging down to the bottom.

4.  African-Americans in the 1870 US Census by Heritage Quest. Lists all black or mulatto heads of household, males over 50, females over 70 and those with a different surname in household.

5.  Complete 1880 US Census by FamilySearch. Lists all those counted in the 1880 census.
